Yes, we go out for walks around the neighborhood and in the park across the street.\u00a0 But there are still too many people about and not enough of them are wearing masks.\u00a0 So mostly we\u2019re indoors.\u00a0 Here are some wine-related activities we\u2019re engaging in (different than usual in some respects) that you might be doing as well.\u00a0 And please send your ideas for other blues-chasers to <a href=\"about:blank\">lgsjr@powertasting.com<\/a> or leave a comment here.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Zoom happy hours<\/strong> Since we can\u2019t get together with friends, we do it virtually. We held a Passover-commencing event, with red wine in hand.\u00a0 A few days later, it was an Easter family gathering (in French) with a Champagne toast.\u00a0\u00a0 We all wondered why we didn\u2019t do that more often.\u00a0 We\u2019re setting up two-on-two happy hours now with friends far and wide.\u00a0 Yes, we know all about the potential security problems with Zoom, but we haven\u2019t experienced them.\u00a0 If Beijing wants to listen in to our friendly conversations, we can live with that.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Raiding the stash <\/strong>We suppose that most <em>Power Tasting<\/em> readers always have some wine at home and they\u2019ve put aside a few bottles that they consider \u201cspecial occasion\u201d wine. With Passover and Easter in the past month, there were a few occasions that were indeed special.\u00a0 But then there were evenings that were, well, just Tuesdays or Thursdays.\u00a0 We\u2019d make a little nicer meal and open one of those stashed-away bottles.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to feel celebratory these days, but a great wine does dull the pain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/pizzawine.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1533 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/pizzawine-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"634\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/pizzawine-300x200.png 300w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/pizzawine-768x512.png 768w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/pizzawine-1024x683.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Photo courtesy of The Spruce Eats<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pizza night <\/strong>We sorely miss going to restaurants, and we bet you do, too. A lot of our favorites said they\u2019d be open for pickup and delivery. That doesn\u2019t seem to be working out too well for them, so they\u2019ve stopped.\u00a0 But pizzerias have always had a delivery business, so some but not all are still going.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been ordering on Friday evenings.\u00a0 Some of the pizza places in our neighborhood have wine as well, so we order from them, if only to help their revenue a bit more.\u00a0 One had a pretty good Nero d\u2019Avola, so we bought a few extra bottles before they stopped delivering.\u00a0 Another had a pretty poor Primitivo; we\u2019ll stick with our own wine the next time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Having an occasional digestif<\/strong> Cognac and Armagnac are wines, so to speak, if you push the boundaries of drinks made from grapes rather far. Whiskey and Rum would be wine if grapes grew where they make these liquors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ordering more <\/strong>The California wineries depend heavily on tasting room traffic for their profitability. Without us wine tasters stopping by, they\u2019re not doing as well.\u00a0 We\u2019re getting a lot of sales phone calls from our wine clubs, and even from some wineries we have visited but are not members.\u00a0 We\u2019re doing our bit by joining another club and buying a bit more than usual.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Like everyone else, we\u2019re staying home.
