{"id":1559,"date":"2020-05-29T18:44:09","date_gmt":"2020-05-29T18:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1559"},"modified":"2020-05-29T18:44:09","modified_gmt":"2020-05-29T18:44:09","slug":"jerome-arizona","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1559","title":{"rendered":"Jerome, Arizona"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The State of Arizona is a wonderland for vacationers.\u00a0 There\u00a0are the thriving metropolis of Phoenix and its tony suburb, Scottsdale, where you can visit Frank Lloyd Wright\u2019s Taliesin West.\u00a0 Natural beauties abound.\u00a0 There\u00a0are the magnificent red rocks of Sedona, the Painted Desert and more stunning than any other natural wonder is the Grand Canyon.\u00a0 We encourage you to avail yourself of all the best that Arizona has to offer.<\/p>\n<p>And if you have one more day, we suggest you drive to the tiny village of Jerome.\u00a0 Once a thriving mining town, Jerome once had 15,000 residents.\u00a0 But then the mine closed, the people left and it became a veritable ghost town.\u00a0 Today, Jerome has been revived as\u2026well, there\u2019s no other way to say it, Jerome is a tourist destination.\u00a0 Not a trap, it\u2019s too much for that. \u00a0But it exists only so that tourists can come look at it, eat a meal or two, buy souvenirs and leave.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/jerome_old.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1560 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/jerome_old.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"342\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Jerome as it once was\u2026 Photo courtesy of the Jerome Grand Hotel.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So why are we featuring it as a Place to Visit in <em>Power Tasting<\/em>?\u00a0 Because there are local wines to taste in Jerome.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/jerome_new.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1561 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/jerome_new-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"654\" height=\"436\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/jerome_new-300x200.png 300w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/jerome_new.png 650w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 654px) 100vw, 654px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u2026And as it is today.\u00a0 Photo courtesy of Experience Scottsdale.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Every state in America has vineyards.\u00a0 The three Pacific states make world renowned wines.\u00a0 A few others are producing some creditable wines.\u00a0 It is <em>Power Tasting\u2019s<\/em> policy not to say bad things about any winery, but we aren\u2019t urging you to make the journey to Jerome just for the wines.\u00a0 But we do recommend that you make it if you are in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Getting there is half the fun, if your idea of fun is driving up a long, steep road.\u00a0 You are rewarded for that drive by magnificent views across the desert.\u00a0 If you\u2019re the one driving, keep your eyes on the road; if you\u2019re a passenger, try not to let your knuckles get too white.<\/p>\n<p>Once you get into town and find somewhere to park, the best thing to do is just walk around.\u00a0 In some ways, Jerome is small-town America, with the emphasis on \u201csmall\u201d.\u00a0 In another, it\u2019s a lovingly recreated (and somewhat embellished) corner of the now-lost West.\u00a0 There are no gunfights on Main Street and probably never were, but there are saloons, cafes, galleries and restored buildings.<\/p>\n<p>And there are winery tasting rooms.\u00a0 Among them are Caduceus Cellars, Merkin Vineyards, Jerome Winery, Vina Zona, Echo Canyon and others.\u00a0 Most of them offer a fairly wide selection of wines, starting with the expected varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel.\u00a0 But many feature less common grapes like Aglianico, Nebbiolo, Garnacha and blends of just about anything they can grow.\u00a0 We don\u2019t think that any of these grapes were intended for production in the High Chaparral, but there are some hardy pioneers who are doing it.<\/p>\n<p>A visit to Jerome may not reward the avid wine taster with a life-changing experience.\u00a0 But you can have a fun day visiting a restored ghost town.\u00a0 And when you get home, you can brag that you tasted wines made in Arizona.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The State of Arizona is a wonderland for vacationers.\u00a0 There\u00a0are the thriving metropolis of Phoenix and its tony suburb, Scottsdale, where you can visit Frank Lloyd Wright\u2019s Taliesin West.\u00a0 Natural beauties abound.\u00a0 There\u00a0are the magnificent red rocks of Sedona, the Painted Desert and more stunning than any other natural wonder is the Grand Canyon.\u00a0 We &hellip;
