{"id":1566,"date":"2020-05-29T18:56:54","date_gmt":"2020-05-29T18:56:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1566"},"modified":"2020-05-29T18:56:54","modified_gmt":"2020-05-29T18:56:54","slug":"stags-leap-wine-cellars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1566","title":{"rendered":"Stag\u2019s Leap Wine Cellars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It gets a little confusing writing about Stag\u2019s Leap (https:\/\/www.stagsleapwinecellars.com\/).\u00a0 It\u2019s all about the apostrophe.\u00a0 The district or AVA it\u2019s in is Stags Leap (no apostrophe), a simple statement that stags do leap. Stags\u2019 Leap (with a trailing apostrophe) refers to the leap used by many stags and is also a different winery nearby, best known for its Petite Sirah.\u00a0 And the leap used by a single stag \u2013 Stag\u2019s Leap \u2013 is the one we\u2019re talking about here.<\/p>\n<p>Stag\u2019s Leap Wine Cellars is a winery of almost mythical importance in Napa Valley.\u00a0 Started by Warren Winiarski in 1972, his Cabernet Sauvignon was the winner of the famous Judgement of Paris contest in 1976 that put Napa Valley solidly on the map of Wine Country.\u00a0 In 2007, Mr. Winiarski sold Stag\u2019s Leap to an international consortium and it hasn\u2019t been the same since.<\/p>\n<p>That last sentence might be interpreted negatively, but it was only intended to say that for the visiting wine taster, the experience is totally different from what it once was.\u00a0 We make no secret about our nostalgia for the old Stag\u2019s Leap and have <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=429\">written about it in the past<\/a>.\u00a0 It was the House that Winiarski built, made of wood and redolent of history.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_5428.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1567\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_5428-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_5428-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_5428-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_5428-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s visitor will find a modern, architecturally interesting building made of stone and glass.\u00a0 After you park your car, you approach the building through a garden of desert shrubs.\u00a0 If that seems a bit strange for Napa Valley, we think it\u2019s just to set you up for the lushness of the vineyards on display behind the building.\u00a0 As soon as you enter into the building, you\u2019ll be welcomed by a concierge, as they call their greeters, who will first check if you have a reservation and then direct you to an server whoa will introduce you to their wines.\u00a0 Through a vast glass window, you see some of the most storied vineyards in California: S.L.V. and Fay.\u00a0 These have been producing top tier Cabernet Sauvignons for decades and each produces single vineyard wines.\u00a0 (It was the S.L.V. that was the victor in Paris.)\u00a0 They also make a wine called Cask 23, which combines the grapes from the two vineyards.\u00a0 There is another nearby vineyard where they raise grapes for Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, but it\u2019s the reds that make Stag\u2019s Leap famous.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_5420.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1568 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_5420-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"659\" height=\"439\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_5420-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_5420-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_5420-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 659px) 100vw, 659px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Visitors are presented with all of these wines.\u00a0 We recommend that you ask your server to pour all three of the Cabs at the same time so you can go back and forth and compare them.\u00a0 We also suggest that you ask if they have any of their Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon available.\u00a0 This wine is a blend of sourced grapes from around Napa Valley.\u00a0 Call us Philistines but we often like this wine as much as its more reputed big sisters.<\/p>\n<p>On the basis of several visits, we find that the servers are quite friendly but not deeply knowledgeable about the wines they are pouring.\u00a0 They\u2019re more hosts than educators.\u00a0 But they are well-versed in the history of the winery and seem eager to make certain that you enjoy your visit to the maximum.<\/p>\n<p>No, Stag\u2019s Leap isn\u2019t what it once was, but what is?\u00a0 It is only fair to rate the winery on the basis of the experience and the wines that you have today.\u00a0 And on both scores, a visit to Stag\u2019s Leap rates high.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It gets a little confusing writing about Stag\u2019s Leap (https:\/\/www.stagsleapwinecellars.com\/).\u00a0 It\u2019s all about the apostrophe.\u00a0 The district or AVA it\u2019s in is Stags Leap (no apostrophe), a simple statement that stags do leap.
