{"id":1600,"date":"2020-07-29T13:52:42","date_gmt":"2020-07-29T13:52:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1600"},"modified":"2021-12-29T18:12:07","modified_gmt":"2021-12-29T18:12:07","slug":"tasting-safely","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1600","title":{"rendered":"Tasting Safely"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s say a few things right up front: Wine contains alcohol.\u00a0 Alcohol is not a good thing to consume when driving.\u00a0 Going wine tasting means drinking alcohol and usually requires some driving.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a bit of a conundrum, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 Here are some of our tips for wine tasting safely.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Know your limit.<\/strong> Even the most stringent state laws allow a little bit of alcohol in your blood, so it\u2019s important for you to know how much you can sip before you hit that limit.\u00a0 You <em>can\u2019t<\/em> wait until you feel the alcohol; by then it\u2019s already too late.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you don\u2019t know your limit, be the first driver. <\/strong>For one thing, don\u2019t go wine tasting alone.\u00a0 If you know you can\u2019t take a lot, do your share of the driving before the sipping begins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/limo1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1601 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/limo1-300x185.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"668\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/limo1-300x185.png 300w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/limo1-768x473.png 768w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/limo1-825x510.png 825w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/limo1.png 1020w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/a><em>Photo courtesy of Cal Limo.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Or hire someone to drive.<\/strong> There are cabs, limo services and Lyft\/Uber.\u00a0 Yes, it adds to the cost.\u00a0 But it ensures your safety from being pulled over and surely reduces your vulnerability to accidents.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sip, don\u2019t drink.<\/strong> That should be the motto for all wine tasting.\u00a0 The idea is to taste the wines so you know what to buy later on.\u00a0 If you\u2019re finishing every glass put in front of you, you\u2019re drinking too much to be safe on the road.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Share a tasting.<\/strong> If you and your companion share a tasting and only sip; and if you taste, say, five wines at any given winery, you\u2019re likely to consume around a half a glass of wine each.\u00a0 If you figure in the time for looking around the winery, talking with the server, maybe buying some wine, it will take up an hour.\u00a0 Thus, if you visit six wineries and take an hour for lunch, you\u2019ll consume three glasses in seven hours.\u00a0 Is that within your limit?\u00a0 If so, you have a plan for a fine day of tasting in Wine Country.\u00a0 If not, see the advice above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/keys1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1602 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/keys1-300x168.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"652\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/keys1-300x168.png 300w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/keys1-768x431.png 768w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/keys1.png 945w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 652px) 100vw, 652px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Photo courtesy of Texas Lone Star Valet.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Deal with the exceptions.<\/strong> There are some wineries that only have seated tastings and don\u2019t permit sharing.\u00a0 Often these are the makers of some of the finest wines in their region and you don\u2019t want to restrict yourself to a sip or two.\u00a0 It is not for us to discourage you from some of the best experiences in wine tasting.\u00a0 But if you particularly want to taste the Cabernet Sauvignon, go light on the Chardonnay.\u00a0 And maybe avoid seeing the bottom of the glass of the Merlot and the Malbec.\u00a0 These tastings tend to be longer, so perhaps they will account for half your day.\u00a0 And if you find you have consumed more wine than you expected to, cut the day short.<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re going to consume alcohol, <strong>put some food in your belly<\/strong> too.\u00a0 Always have <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1218\">breakfast<\/a> before going wine tasting.\u00a0 Keep some crackers, chips or pretzels in the car to have something to nibble on, along with a bottle of water.\u00a0 Always stop for <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=69\">lunch<\/a>.\u00a0 In fact, you should generally make lunch a part of your wine tasting experience.\u00a0 As a rule, areas where people appreciate wine have good restaurants, too.\u00a0 And picnicking at a winery is a treat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s say a few things right up front: Wine contains alcohol.\u00a0 Alcohol is not a good thing to consume when driving.\u00a0 Going wine tasting means drinking alcohol and usually requires some driving.
