{"id":1781,"date":"2021-02-25T19:58:29","date_gmt":"2021-02-25T19:58:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1781"},"modified":"2021-02-25T20:00:13","modified_gmt":"2021-02-25T20:00:13","slug":"chateau-puech-haut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1781","title":{"rendered":"Ch\u00e2teau Puech-Haut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ch\u00e2teau Puech-Haut (<a href=\"about:blank\">www.puech-haut.com<\/a>) is just about the eastern-most winemaker in Languedoc, France.\u00a0 Their winery is located in the Pic St-Loup appellation, with vineyards in Saint-Dr\u00e9z\u00e9ry and in the Cevennes mountains further north.\u00a0 The tasting room is an easy drive from the city of Montpellier, which is well worth a visit itself.\u00a0 Now, all these place names may be fairly foreign to American readers.\u00a0 They\u2019re in a less visited section of southwest France, and they\u2019re worth knowing about.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/puech_haut_blurred.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1783 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/puech_haut_blurred-300x248.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"594\" height=\"491\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/puech_haut_blurred-300x248.png 300w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/puech_haut_blurred.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><\/a><em>The tasting room at Ch\u00e2teau Puech-Haut.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are a number of reasons to visit Puech-Haut if you\u2019re in the vicinity. Of course, there\u2019s the wine.\u00a0 For the most part, their wines are quite pleasant, especially their ros\u00e9s.\u00a0 They make them from the usual Rh\u00f4ne grapes: Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne.\u00a0 Their usual tasting menu gives you a good idea of what they make in white, red and ros\u00e9.\u00a0 We found that if you show a serious interest in what they make, they\u2019re quite willing to open some of their better bottles for you.<\/p>\n<p>Puech-Haut is located near the foot of the Pic St-Loup mountain, which gives its name to the AOC. \u00a0The winery is surrounded by grape vines and overlooked by a vine-covered ch\u00e2teau that is more of the nice French country house.\u00a0 A big deal is made about the massive barrel near the ch\u00e2teau.\u00a0 It is indeed large, holding so they say, 300,000 litres, which they claim to be the biggest in the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_5367-e1614282932361.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1784 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_5367-e1614282932361-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"407\" height=\"611\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_5367-e1614282932361-200x300.jpg 200w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_5367-e1614282932361-768x1152.jpg 768w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_5367-e1614282932361-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 407px) 100vw, 407px\" \/><\/a><em>One of the painted barrels, with some containing wine in the background.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There is more to say about barrels at Puech-Haut.\u00a0 It\u2019s not often that we take any notice of bulk wine, a bag-in-a-box.\u00a0 These serve a purpose; Puech-Haut has a different approach.\u00a0 They sell wine in bulk is three-litre <em>barrels<\/em>.\u00a0 Moreover, the barrels are painted in colorful, amusing, modernistic themes.\u00a0 When you finish most boxed wines, you throw away the box.\u00a0 Puech-Haut\u2019s are collectibles. \u00a0They also show off some of their actual aging barrels, which are also gaily decorated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/20190921_113502-e1614283072771.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1785 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/20190921_113502-e1614283072771-146x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"302\" height=\"621\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/20190921_113502-e1614283072771-146x300.jpg 146w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/20190921_113502-e1614283072771-768x1580.jpg 768w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/20190921_113502-e1614283072771-498x1024.jpg 498w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/20190921_113502-e1614283072771.jpg 1960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 302px) 100vw, 302px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They also make a deal out of some of their bottles.\u00a0 They\u2019re elongated and nearly triangular in profile with a squarish base.\u00a0 The bottles for the whites and ros\u00e9s are frosted and they have glass stoppers (pink ones for the ros\u00e9s).\u00a0 In a wine store, your eye is immediately attracted to these bottles and we bet that many people buy one with the thought of reusing the bottles as vases or carafes.\u00a0 Puech-Haut realizes that they make good advertising and give them away at the tasting room.<\/p>\n<p>A few notes in case you do visit Puech-Haut.\u00a0 The tasting room is spacious and well furnished, but the layout is such that it can get quite crowded rather quickly.\u00a0 Those of us who go wine tasting often are used to heading for one winery and then visiting others in the area.\u00a0 This doesn\u2019t work well at Puech-Haut;
