{"id":1794,"date":"2021-03-30T14:50:20","date_gmt":"2021-03-30T14:50:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1794"},"modified":"2021-03-30T14:50:20","modified_gmt":"2021-03-30T14:50:20","slug":"visiting-napanoma-in-september-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1794","title":{"rendered":"Visiting Napa\/Noma in September"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This article concludes Power Tasting\u2019s irregular series on visiting Napa Valley and Sonoma County (\u201cNapa\/Noma\u201d) in each of the months of the year.\u00a0 So many people ask when the best time would be, and the answer is always the same: There is no <strong>best<\/strong> time.\u00a0 Every month has its charms and its drawbacks.\u00a0 If you\u2019d like to read all of the series, scroll way down on the masthead on the left of on our Welcome page and click on Months.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One thing differentiates a visit to Napa\/Noma in September from all the other months: the harvest is in full flight every day.\u00a0 There are plusses and minuses to that fact.\u00a0 There are some things that you can only see and do if you are there for The Crush, as they call it.\u00a0 On the other hand, there are some things that you might want to see and do that are more difficult when the harvest is on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_2373-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1796\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_2373-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"669\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_2373-2-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_2373-2-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_2373-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 669px) 100vw, 669px\" \/><\/a><em>Carneros in September, between Napa and Sonoma Counties.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you want to get a visceral understanding of the industrial process that is winemaking, you can surely do that in September.\u00a0 Just drive around a bit and you\u2019ll find workers in the vineyards picking grapes, loading them in baskets and dumping the fruit into trucks.\u00a0 However, just as often these days, you\u2019ll see giant harvesters doing the job without hand laborers.\u00a0 You\u2019re more likely to see the manual process at the vineyards producing more expensive wines; the cost of labor is a factor in the price.\u00a0 But the quality also comes from selective picking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_2561.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1795\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_2561-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"632\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_2561-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_2561-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_2561-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 632px) 100vw, 632px\" \/><\/a><em>Making wine at Saintsbury.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some wineries process the grapes in outdoor facilities.\u00a0 Easiest to find are the sorting and de-stemming operations.\u00a0 You may very well not get to see the actual crushing and maceration of the wine.\u00a0 These are industrial processes and the last thing winemakers need is a crowd of tourists trying to figure out what\u2019s going on.\u00a0 You may find that winery tours available the rest of the year are not available during the week or two that the harvest is on.<\/p>\n<p>Because so many people do want to visit during this time of the year, hotel rooms are harder to get and more expensive when you do.\u00a0 Restaurants also tend to fill up sooner because of all the tourists, but fewer tables are taken by locals, many of whom are exhausted from making wine.<\/p>\n<p>As elsewhere, the beginning of the month is still summer, while autumn rolls in at the end.\u00a0 But California stays warmer for longer than other places, sometimes much warmer for much longer.\u00a0 Sadly, one of the considerations about visiting Napa\/Noma in September is the possibility that wildfires will erupt.\u00a0 In 2020, the biggest of the Napa fires began in late September and lasted into October.\u00a0 But in Sonoma County, the fires began in August.\u00a0 In 2017, they occurred in October in both locations.\u00a0 There is no reason to think that wild fires <em>will<\/em> happen, but plenty of reason to think they <em>might<\/em>.\u00a0 This has to be part of your travel planning in these perilous times.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the issues, it\u2019s a lot of fun to see The Crush.\u00a0 That\u2019s a powerful reason to visit Napa\/Noma in September.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This article concludes Power Tasting\u2019s irregular series on visiting Napa Valley and Sonoma County (\u201cNapa\/Noma\u201d) in each of the months of the year.\u00a0 So many people ask when the best time would be, and the answer is always the same: There is no best time.\u00a0 Every month has its charms and its drawbacks.\u00a0 If you\u2019d &hellip;
