{"id":1927,"date":"2021-08-30T16:00:56","date_gmt":"2021-08-30T16:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1927"},"modified":"2024-06-29T17:34:45","modified_gmt":"2024-06-29T17:34:45","slug":"how-to-change-your-mind-about-wineand-not","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1927","title":{"rendered":"How to Change Your Mind About Wine\u2026and Not"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In our earliest years of wine tasting, we thought that only wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon were worth drinking.\u00a0 Oh, well, we were young and foolish.\u00a0 Of course, we\u2019ve broadened our tastes significantly in the intervening time.\u00a0 Each time we realized we really liked a wine we hadn\u2019t cared for before, we had to change our mind.<\/p>\n<p>The same applies in reverse.\u00a0 There were some awfully sweet wines like Mateus and Lancers that we wouldn\u2019t be interested in anymore.\u00a0 Perhaps if we tried them again we might like them, but we doubt it.<\/p>\n<p>Changing your mind about anything isn\u2019t easy, wine included.\u00a0 So here are some tips for revising your opinions specifically about wine, but maybe broader than that.\u00a0 Many of these lessons we learned in Sonoma County, the theme of this issue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/goodbad1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1928 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/goodbad1-300x144.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"305\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/goodbad1-300x144.jpg 300w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/goodbad1.jpg 756w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><em>Photos courtesy of Kazzit and the dailymeal.com<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Keep your mind open.<\/strong> You\u2019ll never improve your taste if you aren\u2019t able to accept the possibility that you might learn to like wines you hadn\u2019t liked before.\u00a0 For the longest time, we weren\u2019t particularly fond of Pinot Noir.\u00a0 We found them too thin, too acid.\u00a0 But we have learned to appreciate some Pinot Noirs, especially those from Carneros and Santa Lucia Highlands.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep trying. <\/strong>Maybe your ability to appreciate certain tastes and aromas has expanded.\u00a0 Or maybe you\u2019ll find a winemaker who does a better job than those you have tried before.\u00a0 One of the advantages of wine tasting in Sonoma County is the vast range of varietals that are available there.\u00a0 Often one winery will have a dozen different ones.\u00a0 So if you try wine made from grapes you haven\u2019t cared for in the past, you\u2019ll still be able to sip others you know you like.\u00a0 Maybe you\u2019ll be surprised.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Differentiate the same types of wine from different areas.<\/strong> There are still some Pinot Noirs that don\u2019t appeal to us.\u00a0 We just can\u2019t get our tongues around this varietal the way they make it in Sonoma County\u2019s Green Valley.\u00a0 But there are some just a bit south in Petaluma that do please us.\u00a0 Is it terroir?\u00a0 Specific winemakers?\u00a0 Sheer luck?\u00a0 Whatever the case, we went from \u201cWe don\u2019t like it\u201d to \u201cWe don\u2019t like some of it\u201d which is one way to change your mind.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=102\"><strong>Go back, you may love it.<\/strong><\/a> Sometimes a winery just has a bad year.\u00a0 Here\u2019s an example.\u00a0 We have always loved the Zinfandels from <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=819\">Limerick Lane<\/a>.\u00a0 But in 2011, the winery changed hands and the new owners, by their own admission, didn\u2019t make wines that lived up to the potential of their vines that year.\u00a0 We dropped out of their club and didn\u2019t visit again for several years.\u00a0 When we did we were delightedly surprised.\u00a0 Now we visit whenever we are in Healdsburg and buy some of their Zins every year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recognize that your tastes change.<\/strong> It may not be the wine that changes, but you.\u00a0 Whether your tongue has become more sophisticated or you just have learned to like more wines, go with it.\u00a0 There\u2019s no reason not to accept your tastes for what they are, as long as you are ready to change them when given the opportunity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In our earliest years of wine tasting, we thought that only wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon were worth drinking.\u00a0 Oh, well, we were young and foolish.\u00a0 Of course, we\u2019ve broadened our tastes significantly in the intervening time.\u00a0 Each time we realized we really liked a wine we hadn\u2019t cared for before, we had to change &hellip;
