{"id":2020,"date":"2022-01-29T19:57:41","date_gmt":"2022-01-29T19:57:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2020"},"modified":"2022-01-29T19:58:33","modified_gmt":"2022-01-29T19:58:33","slug":"winery-glassware","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2020","title":{"rendered":"Winery Glassware"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we wrote quite a few years ago, there was once a time that wineries gave away <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=72\">souvenir glasses<\/a> if you stopped by and had a taste of their wines.\u00a0 In fact, their tastings were free, too!\u00a0 (And still are in <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1458\">a few places<\/a>, believe it or not.)\u00a0 We\u2019re reminded of this because we recently got rid of nearly all of the glasses we had collected on wine tasting trips over the years.\u00a0 Most of them were tiny and thick and we had too many; we don\u2019t know why we kept them, except for the memories.\u00a0 A few were of high quality and we kept those, because\u2026well, just because.<\/p>\n<p>But it caused us to give some thought to the role glassware plays in the wine tasting experience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/glasses3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2021\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/glasses3-300x139.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"652\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/glasses3-300x139.png 300w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/glasses3.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 652px) 100vw, 652px\" \/><\/a><em>Photo courtesy of Kendall-Jackson.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In some ways, the quality of the glasses is indicative of the winery owners\u2019 perception of their wine and their customers.\u00a0 There are still some who serve tastings in small, clunky glasses.\u00a0 Maybe they just don\u2019t care, or think their customers don\u2019t care or that they couldn\u2019t tell the difference anyway.\u00a0 Our experience is that many \u2013 certainly not all \u2013 people we meet in tasting rooms are reasonably familiar with wine and would appreciate a better glass.<\/p>\n<p>At the other extreme, we\u2019ve been finding some really fine glasses in some tasting rooms.\u00a0 They have copious bowls, no lip (that little bulge you sometime find) at all on the edge of the glass, thin stems and a great feel in your hand.\u00a0 If you turn the base of the glass slowly in the right light, you may find the mark of an Austrian or German glassmaker, such as Reidel, Spiegelau or Schott Zweizel.\u00a0 These wineries make, or at least think they make, great wine that deserve great glasses.<\/p>\n<p>But does it really make a difference?\u00a0 Actually, yes it does.\u00a0 A glass with the room to swirl the wine will open up the aromas in a way that a poorer glass cannot do.\u00a0 And your ability to stick your nose in the glass as you sip will enhance your wine tasting enjoyment as well.\u00a0 There is a sensual pleasure to holding a well-balanced wine glass that you can only understand if you can compare it with the other kind.\u00a0 That\u2019s why you don\u2019t serve fine wine in jelly jars.<\/p>\n<p>What if you don\u2019t have exceptional wine glasses at home?\u00a0 Will it make a difference to the wine if you buy some and take it home?\u00a0 Not exactly.\u00a0 But wine glasses are part of the allure of wine tasting. \u00a0So enjoy those fine glasses while you\u2019re there!<\/p>\n<p>Many of the gift shops at wineries will sell you their engraved glasses.\u00a0 If your intent is to have a souvenir of your trip, by all means go ahead.\u00a0 But if you are looking for quality glasses for your home, there are much better values to be had in the stores and on the internet.<\/p>\n<p>And at the end of the day, if someone offers us Ch\u00e2teau Petrus in a plastic cup, we\u2019ll be happy to take it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As we wrote quite a few years ago, there was once a time that wineries gave away souvenir glasses if you stopped by and had a taste of their wines.\u00a0 In fact, their tastings were free, too!\u00a0 (And still are in a few places, believe it or not.)\u00a0 We\u2019re reminded of this because we recently &hellip;
