{"id":2044,"date":"2022-02-27T17:58:51","date_gmt":"2022-02-27T17:58:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2044"},"modified":"2022-02-27T17:58:51","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T17:58:51","slug":"cakebread-cellars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2044","title":{"rendered":"Cakebread Cellars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are some wineries you visit for the gorgeous views.\u00a0 Others have unique architecture.\u00a0 Some (not our favorites) cultivate a party atmosphere.\u00a0 You go wine tasting at Cakebread Cellars (<a href=\"about:blank\">www.cakebread.com<\/a>) for the wine.<\/p>\n<p>Now, <em>Power Tasting<\/em> does not do wine reviews, but it\u2019s fair to say that Cakebread makes some pretty fine wine.\u00a0 They\u2019re best known for Cabernet Sauvignon and we\u2019ve enjoyed their Pinot Noir in the past.\u00a0 The winery building itself is pleasant enough, but not such an architectural wonder that you\u2019d make a special trip.\u00a0 The big attractions are an attention to wine tasting as a unique activity and some of the most knowledgeable servers we have ever encountered.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/cakebread.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2045 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/cakebread-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/cakebread-300x200.png 300w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/cakebread.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><\/a><em>Cakebread Cellars\u2019 winery.\u00a0 Photo courtesy of the winery.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the past, we have always indulged ourselves with the reserve tasting.\u00a0 The ability of the servers to understand each visitor\u2019s level of knowledge and interest and explain the wines in alignment with the individual, have always impressed us.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know if it is still the case, but pre-pandemic we learned that all the servers in the reserve room were qualified sommeliers.\u00a0 In one case, a server showed us a book on wine that he had written.\u00a0 Impressive, right ?<\/p>\n<p>These days the reserve tasting is supposedly limited to Cabernet Sauvignons and they do pour quite a few of them.\u00a0 We\u2019ve found that there\u2019s usually some other interesting wine behind the bar, just for contrast.\u00a0 On one visit, we expressed disappointment not to taste their Merlot, so the server ran out and got a bottle to open for us.\u00a0 This is indicative of their attitude about wine tasting and towards their guests. They clearly enjoy sharing wine and experience with people.\u00a0 As a visitor, you cannot help but being caught up in their enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<p>We have not tried it, but Cakebread now has a seated group tasting, highlighting library wines.\u00a0 We\u2019re sure it lives up to the experiences we have had.<\/p>\n<p>Cakebread is very serious about their \u201cby appointment only\u201d policy.\u00a0 While many wineries use the limitation as a way of managing crowds, at Cakebread no reservation means no tasting.\u00a0 Of course, this gives the staff the opportunity to really focus on the people who do call or email in advance.\u00a0 We recognize that the ways and manners of Napa Valley wine tasting have changed since our earliest wine tasting days.\u00a0 Still, there\u2019s a different feel to such formality that doesn\u2019t always sit well with us.<\/p>\n<p>Jack and Dolores Cakebread were among the pioneers of Napa Valley winemaking back in the 1970\u2019s.\u00a0 Their sons now run the enterprise, which has grown to include vineyards as far afield as Howell Mountain and Anderson Valley.\u00a0 Cakebread\u2019s all wood winery building pays homage to those old days, so you can still feel a little of the vibe even if today\u2019s reality is somewhat different.\u00a0 Cakebread Cellars is an expression of what Napa Valley was and what it has become.\u00a0 For lovers of the distinctly Californian style of winemaking, this winery is definitely a place to visit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are some wineries you visit for the gorgeous views.\u00a0 Others have unique architecture.\u00a0 Some (not our favorites) cultivate a party atmosphere.\u00a0 You go wine tasting at Cakebread Cellars (www.cakebread.com) for the wine.
