{"id":2212,"date":"2022-10-28T17:15:56","date_gmt":"2022-10-28T17:15:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2212"},"modified":"2022-10-28T17:15:56","modified_gmt":"2022-10-28T17:15:56","slug":"wine-tasting-at-parties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2212","title":{"rendered":"Wine Tasting at Parties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fine wine goes with fine dining.\u00a0 No one serves an \u201905 Latour at a barbecue (well, at least no one we know).\u00a0 When anyone is planning a party, in the office or at home, he or she rarely scans the cellar to find the finest.\u00a0 Alas, there are too many people who figure that the beer and the hard stuff are the beverages of choice and, if they serve any wine at all, it comes from one of two jugs \u2013 red and white.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/plastic-cups.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2213 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/plastic-cups-300x199.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/plastic-cups-300x199.png 300w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/plastic-cups.png 632w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Photo courtesy of Zonin Prosecco.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At the same time, there is no reason that the wine at parties has to be plonk.\u00a0 With a little thoughtfulness and a budget just above rock bottom, it\u2019s quite possible to offer a variety of wines that can please both the knowledgeable taster and someone who just wants a pleasant beverage to pass the time.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips for potential hosts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t serve anything you haven\u2019t tasted.<\/strong> Sadly, you can\u2019t always trust the advice of a clerk in a wine store.\u00a0 The wine so highly spoken of may be just the one the store couldn\u2019t get rid of.\u00a0 There are plenty of worthy wines under $20 and even some that are under $15.\u00a0 <em>Wine Spectator<\/em> and the New York <em>Times<\/em> generally have issues each year dedicated to available bargains.\u00a0 Use it as a guide.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plan to serve at least four wines.<\/strong> Why four?\u00a0 If you assume that most people who choose wine at a party will select either a red or a white, there may well be someone who doesn\u2019t care for one of your choices.\u00a0 If there\u2019s only one offering, that person is stuck.\u00a0 If you have two of each on hand, it significantly raises your odds to please most people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you find yourself a guest at a shindig organized by a thoughtful host and are confronted by a small array of interesting wines, here are some tips for you.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To begin with, try a little of each wine.<\/strong> Even if you\u2019re partial to white wines, try those and the reds.\u00a0 It shows respect for the hosts and the effort that they put in to please you.\u00a0 It enables you to say, \u201cI\u2019m generally not into big red wines, but that Beaujolais really appealed to me\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Think of the party as an impromptu tasting.<\/strong> Try to appreciate the wines for what they are, not comparing them to other labels of the same grapes.\u00a0 And if you\u2019re being served something from somewhere you never heard of, think of it as an adventure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If there\u2019s a wine you find particularly pleasing, don\u2019t hog it.<\/strong> In fact, recommend it to other guests.\u00a0 If nothing else, it gives you something to talk about with people you don\u2019t know.\u00a0 Again, your host will appreciate you talking up one (or more) of the wines served.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t worry about the glassware.<\/strong> If it\u2019s a catered affair the glasses will be of the sturdy restaurant variety.\u00a0 At someone\u2019s home, expect plastic cups.\u00a0 After all, you\u2019re not going to be the one washing up afterwards.\u00a0 Sure, good goblets enhance good wines, but party wine can survive inferior goblets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fine wine goes with fine dining.\u00a0 No one serves an \u201905 Latour at a barbecue (well, at least no one we know).\u00a0 When anyone is planning a party, in the office or at home, he or she rarely scans the cellar to find the finest.\u00a0 Alas, there are too many people who figure that the &hellip;
