{"id":2468,"date":"2023-09-29T16:55:46","date_gmt":"2023-09-29T16:55:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2468"},"modified":"2023-09-29T16:55:46","modified_gmt":"2023-09-29T16:55:46","slug":"amateur-winemaking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2468","title":{"rendered":"Amateur Winemaking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We like wine; we know a bit about it; and of course we publish <em>Power Tasting<\/em>.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had some friends and acquaintances who are aware of our oenological tendencies tell us that they\/their neighbor\/their father-in-law makes wine at home.\u00a0 And they always tell us it\u2019s as good as the best from Napa\/France\/Italy.\u00a0 There\u2019s no way to put them off by saying, \u201cI\u2019m sure it\u2019s quite good\u201d.\u00a0 They insist on giving us a bottle to hear our opinion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/winemakers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2469 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/winemakers-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"379\" height=\"505\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/winemakers-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/winemakers-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/winemakers.jpg 858w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 379px) 100vw, 379px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Photo courtesy of the San Diego Amateur Winemaking Society.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We suspect they never tasted Petrus and certainly not their home-made wine next to a glass of it.\u00a0 So we sip what they give us, hoping that it isn\u2019t vinegar, swirl it in our mouths a while and then, trying hard to look earnest, tell them that while theirs is interesting, we prefer to stick with the wines we know.\u00a0 Notice the absence of any actual opinion.<\/p>\n<p>This experience comes to mind in our wine tasting travels because quite a few wineries offer the experience of making your own wine.\u00a0 We are aware of several that have similar programs, including Conn Creek and the Wine Foundry in Napa and several places in Texas called Water2Wine. We have tried our hands at blending at Joseph Phelps in Napa Valley, trying to replicate Insignia, their flagship wine.
