{"id":2586,"date":"2024-02-28T20:51:05","date_gmt":"2024-02-28T20:51:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2586"},"modified":"2024-06-29T17:32:11","modified_gmt":"2024-06-29T17:32:11","slug":"right-place-wrong-grape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2586","title":{"rendered":"Right Place, Wrong Grape"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They grow Cabernet Sauvignon in Bordeaux.\u00a0 They grow Tempranillo in the Rioja.\u00a0 There\u2019s Chardonnay in Burgundy and Malbec in Argentina.\u00a0 But let\u2019s keep it domestic.\u00a0 Napa Valley has Cabernet Sauvignon; Pinot Noir is grown in the area around Santa Barbara; and Zinfandel is the hot grape in Dry Creek Valley.\u00a0 There are reasons for these grapes in these locations, including terroir, history and farming techniques.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/paso_pinot.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2587 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/paso_pinot-300x214.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"573\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/paso_pinot-300x214.png 300w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/paso_pinot.png 490w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 573px) 100vw, 573px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Pinot Noir from Paso Robles.\u00a0 Photo courtesy of Paso Robles Daily News.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But there are some times in your wine tasting travels when you might encounter grapes growing in places where they aren\u2019t expected.\u00a0 For example, Pinot Noir usually grows best in a cool, moist climate.\u00a0 But there are quite a few wines made from that grape that can be found in the hot, dry region around Paso Robles.\u00a0 And in Champagne, famed for sparkling white wines, you can find Bouzy red wine.<\/p>\n<p>So if in your travels you should come across wines made from grapes that shouldn\u2019t be there, what should you do?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Does it make sense to try these wines?<\/strong> Well, yes, what do you have to lose?\u00a0 More to the point, you may have a lot to gain.\u00a0 Some vineyard managers may take advantage of microclimates on their properties to grow grapes that can take profit from those conditions.\u00a0 So, for example, many of those Paso Robles Pinot Noirs are grown behind the Templeton Gap, which gets its cool, foggy breezes from the Pacific.\u00a0 These wines are never going to be confused with Burgundies, but some of them do express their own terroir, so they\u2019re worth tasting on their own merits.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Why look for the unexpected wines?<\/strong> That\u2019s one of the reasons to go wine tasting in the first place.\u00a0 If it weren\u2019t for trying these out-of-the-way wines, you could skip wine tasting and stick with your local wine store.\u00a0 In some cases, they may be the only chance you have to taste these kinds of wine at all in that region.\u00a0 We recently wrote about the wines made from Croatian grapes at <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=251\">Grgich Hills<\/a>.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been to a couple of wineries where we were told that they were the <em>only<\/em> ones growing Tannat in California.\u00a0 And I can think of only one where we have tasted Peloursin.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Is it worth the trip to try these wines<\/strong>? Probably not.\u00a0 But that\u2019s not the point.\u00a0 If you\u2019re already tasting the grapes that an area is famous for, trying something unusual is just an <em>addition<\/em> to your experience, not the basic rationale for an excursion.\u00a0 There are places in Wine Country where the growers plant every grape they can, in hopes that the casual buyer will seek a specific varietal.\u00a0 For the most part, most of these wines are not very good, because of both an unfavorable climate and an unfamiliar farmer.\u00a0 There\u2019s a reason they don\u2019t grow Zinfandel in Canada or Marechal Foch (look it up) in <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=301\">Temecula<\/a>, California\u00a0 Or, at least, they shouldn\u2019t.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Are these wines worth buying<\/strong>?
