{"id":2683,"date":"2024-06-29T17:22:38","date_gmt":"2024-06-29T17:22:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2683"},"modified":"2024-06-29T17:31:44","modified_gmt":"2024-06-29T17:31:44","slug":"margerum-wines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2683","title":{"rendered":"Margerum Wines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Power Tasting<\/em> reported on wine tasting in Santa Barbara <a href=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1942\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1942\">several years ago<\/a>; this edition is an update of sorts.\u00a0 At that time, we visited the Margerum tasting room, then at the El Paseo complex.\u00a0 The wines were enjoyable but the room was on a dark alley and it was dark and uninviting inside as well.\u00a0 <em>Power Tasting\u2019s<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=735\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"735\">policy<\/a> is that we don\u2019t print bad reviews; we believe that silence is the best way to deal with wineries that we couldn\u2019t recommend.\u00a0 So we never said anything about Margerum at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/margerum1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"473\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/margerum1-473x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2684\" style=\"width:286px;height:auto\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/margerum1-473x1024.jpg 473w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/margerum1-139x300.jpg 139w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/margerum1.jpg 505w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>The entrance and one of the patios at Margerum Wines.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Margerum (<a href=\"about:blank\">https:\/\/www.margerumwines.com<\/a>) has moved, somewhat surprisingly, to the <a href=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=807\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"807\">Funk Zone<\/a>.&nbsp; But their tasting room in Santa Barbara is anything but funky.&nbsp; (They also have a tasting room in <a href=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1631\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1631\">Los Olivos<\/a> that we haven\u2019t visited.)&nbsp; From the elegant, soaring entrance to the broad, capacious room inside, the message is: \u201cMargerum makes serious wine and should be taken seriously\u201d.&nbsp; [Is the Funk Zone evolving?&nbsp; Time will tell.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/margerum2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/margerum2-1024x473.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2685\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/margerum2-1024x473.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/margerum2-300x139.jpg 300w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/margerum2-768x355.jpg 768w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/margerum2.jpg 1430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The interior of the tasting room at Margerum in Santa Barbara.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The overall ambiance is that of Spanish-accented lounge at a fancy resort.&nbsp; There is a wide bar, terraces in front and on the side, and a separate section above for groups and parties.&nbsp; Perhaps it would be more appropriate to call it a restaurant at resort, because Margerum also has a rather extensive menu.&nbsp; Many wineries will offer a cheese and charcuterie plate, as does Margerum, but this one also has a lengthy list of hors d\u2019oeuvres, sandwiches, salads and pizzas, all prepared on the premises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this would mean nothing if the wines were subpar.&nbsp; While Power Tasting doesn\u2019t review wines as such, we can say that there were several that we enjoyed quite a bit.&nbsp; While Margerum does offer Pinot Noirs and several Sauvignon Blancs, their specialty is wines made from Rh\u00f4ne-style grapes.&nbsp; Our favorites were the Pinot Noir from the Sanford-Benedict vineyard, their Reserve Syrah and particularly their Mourv\u00e8dre.&nbsp; The Margerum Ros\u00e9 is also quite Rh\u00f4ne-like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doug Margerum, the winery\u2019s founder, is a Central Coast wine pioneer and continues to advocate for and consult to other vineyards in the area. He has started a second label, Barden, using his middle name for these wines.&nbsp; The intent, according to their web site is \u201can exploration of cold climate grapes grown in and around the Santa Rita Hills AVA\u201d. We didn\u2019t enjoy them as much as the Margerum-labeled wines.
