{"id":457,"date":"2017-02-01T00:29:10","date_gmt":"2017-02-01T00:29:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=457"},"modified":"2017-02-28T19:17:55","modified_gmt":"2017-02-28T19:17:55","slug":"a-field-guide-to-servers-part-2-the-hosts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=457","title":{"rendered":"A Field Guide to Servers \u2013 Part 2 \u2013 The Hosts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This is a continuation of Power Tasting\u2019s guide to the different sorts of Servers wine tasters may encounter in their expeditions into Wine Country.\u00a0 The previous edition introduced the Pourers, the lowest form of Server.\u00a0 In this section of the field guide, we present the Hosts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What is a Host? <\/em><\/strong>\u00a0A Host pours wine and delivers it to wine tasters.\u00a0 He or she knows nothing about wine in general or even the wine that is going into the taster\u2019s glass.\u00a0 The Host\u2019s objective is simply to make sure that everyone is having a good time.\u00a0 This is often an admirable trait and it can be quite pleasant to deal with a Host in his or her own habitat.\u00a0 Unfortunately, interacting with a Host can be quite frustrating if a taster is interested in knowing anything about the wine being consumed.\u00a0 It is unclear whether a Host can tell the difference between a Pinot Noir and a Petite Sirah, or a Chardonnay for that matter.\u00a0 But while in the company of a Host, it\u2019s Party Time!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-458 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/hostcat-269x300.jpg\" alt=\"hostcat\" width=\"269\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/hostcat-269x300.jpg 269w, http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/hostcat.jpg 358w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>How can you recognize a Host?<\/em>\u00a0 <\/strong>A Host appears to be in perpetual motion, moving from taster to taster quickly enough to avoid questions.\u00a0 You will often hear the cry of the Host, \u201cWhat\u2019ll you\u00a0have next?\u201d\u00a0 If you are able to stop a Host long enough for a question, you will be promised an answer shortly, often giving the Host a chance to ask someone else behind the bar for help.\u00a0 Hosts can be recognized by<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Big smiles, even when inappropriate<\/li>\n<li>Fast talking<\/li>\n<li>Eagerness to explain his or her life story, but not to say anything about wine<\/li>\n<li>Two or more bottles in his or her hands<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hosts will keep refilling your glass, which is both a positive and a negative.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What can you expect from a Host?<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 Wine.\u00a0 Lots of it, along with a smooth patter and a snappy joke.\u00a0 When being served by a Host, it\u2019s often a good idea to just catch the spirit and go along with the party atmosphere.\u00a0 Wine is a social lubricant and there\u2019s nothing wrong with having a good time.\u00a0 Who doesn\u2019t like a good party?\u00a0 As would anyone throwing a shindig, the Host will introduce you to fellow tasters, get a conversation going and keep you involved.\u00a0 The risk, of course, of dealing with a Host is overindulgence, so know when to say you\u2019ve had enough for a while.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>How to get the greatest advantage from a Host?<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 Let the Host run the party; you taste the wine.\u00a0 Have fun by all means but do it slowly.\u00a0 For one thing this keeps the party going longer.\u00a0 For another, you can actually get to appreciate the wine, often in the type of setting when you might be serving it back home.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Where are Hosts found?<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 Oddly, Hosts may be found in really fine wineries as well as in sellers of plonk.\u00a0 You are most likely to meet one on a weekend when tasting rooms are the most crowded and the winery needs the most people to serve their visitors.\u00a0 Look around for a happy, giggly party in a corner of a tasting room.\u00a0 You\u2019re likely to see a Host pouring the wine.<a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/hostcat.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-458\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a continuation of Power Tasting\u2019s guide to the different sorts of Servers wine tasters may encounter in their expeditions into Wine Country.\u00a0 The previous edition introduced the Pourers, the lowest form of Server.\u00a0 In this section of the field guide, we present the Hosts.
