{"id":495,"date":"2017-02-28T19:08:25","date_gmt":"2017-02-28T19:08:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=495"},"modified":"2017-03-29T13:56:27","modified_gmt":"2017-03-29T13:56:27","slug":"the-sellers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=495","title":{"rendered":"A Field Guide to Servers &#8211; Part 3 &#8211; The Sellers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Here is the next installment of Power Tasting\u2019s guide to the Servers one might deal with in Wine Country.\u00a0 There are many species of Servers; we have previously introduced Pourers and Hosts.\u00a0 Here we present the Sellers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What is a Seller?<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 A Seller pours and serves wine, but these are almost secondary characteristics.\u00a0 Like a Host, a Seller is a pretty good talker, but unlike a Host, the Seller\u2019s intention is not that you have a great time but rather that you join the winery\u2019s club or at least buy some wine while you are there.\u00a0 If you show the slightest interest \u2013 and we recommend that you do show interest \u2013 you will be regaled with details about the wine club, how easy it is to join, how much great wine you will receive and what wonderful events you will be invited to.\u00a0 It is best not to mention that you live far away and will probably not be able to attend the events.\u00a0 By showing some interest, you are more likely to taste wine from of a few bottles reserved under the counter for likely joiners.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/seller_cat.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-496\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-496 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/seller_cat.jpg\" alt=\"seller_cat\" width=\"312\" height=\"215\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>How can you recognize a Seller?<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Sellers talk.\u00a0 And Talk.\u00a0 And talk. Some of the palaver is actually rather useful.\u00a0 Sellers generally know a lot about the wine they are serving (if not wine in general) and are happy to describe them to you, always in glowing terms of course.\u00a0 Once you respond, as polite people usually do, by saying that you too like a particular wine, the Seller will move in like a torpedo.\u00a0 A commonly encountered phrase is, \u201cWell, if you liked that\u2026\u201d, and then he or she reaches along the counter and brings up the next inimitable gem. \u00a0(By the way, none of this applies if you ask about a wine club first.\u00a0 Providing you with information you ask for is service, not a sales pitch.)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>How to get the greatest advantage from a Seller?\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong>First of all, you need to have some sales resistance.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t, either be prepared to walk away or to buy something.\u00a0 But encouraging the Seller brings rewards.\u00a0 You\u2019ll get that extra little bit in your glass.\u00a0 The wonderful vintage from yesteryear might suddenly appear, left over from a media\u00a0tasting and held in reserve just for <em>you<\/em>.\u00a0 You really will learn a lot about that winery\u2019s production and wine philosophy.\u00a0 And, to be fair, you might actually find that the wine club or a few bottles being pushed at you do attract your taste buds and your pocketbook.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Where are Sellers found?\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong>Sellers can be found in virtually any tasting room, but a rule of thumb is that wineries with cheaper wines don\u2019t benefit as much from club membership or a few bottles sold and the wineries with the highest priced wines don\u2019t benefit from the Seller\u2019s personality.\u00a0 But when you walk into a winery with a lot of bottles in the $75 to $100 range, the Seller\u2019s distinctive spiel is likely to be heard.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here is the next installment of Power Tasting\u2019s guide to the Servers one might deal with in Wine Country.\u00a0 There are many species of Servers; we have previously introduced Pourers and Hosts.\u00a0 Here we present the Sellers.
