So-So Wine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is <em>Power Tasting\u2019s<\/em> policy not to give bad reviews of any wineries.\u00a0 We feel that there are so many wonderful wines and so many owners who do their best to make their visitors feel welcome that there is no need for negativism.\u00a0 If we feel that a particular winery makes poor wine, the less said the better.\u00a0 But Power Tasting is about the experience of wine tasting as a whole: the architecture, ambiance, scenery and d\u00e9cor as well as the wines themselves.<\/p>\n<p>We are not arrogant enough to think that we have the last word on the quality of wines; if a winery is in business, someone must like what they sell.\u00a0 There are some wineries where we are not crazy about the wines but find the overall experience to be pleasurable.<\/p>\n<p>If we had all the time in the world to go wine tasting and an infinite capacity to imbibe alcohol, we could just visit tasting room after tasting room without a care.\u00a0 But our time in Wine Country is limited and precious and, as with everyone, we need to be cautious about how much we drink, even if we are only sipping.\u00a0 So it becomes a question of how we treat those establishments where we don\u2019t appreciate the wines but do enjoy all the rest.<\/p>\n<p>Certain places come to mind, although we will not mention names.\u00a0 There is one in Napa Valley decorated with fine antiques, with a large fireplace and comfortable sofas and chairs.\u00a0 It would be the library of our dreams, the kind of place where we would sit with a <em>vin de m\u00e9ditation<\/em> and read great literature.\u00a0 But we don\u2019t like the wine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20180928_110115.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1071\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20180928_110115-300x146.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"666\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20180928_110115-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20180928_110115-768x373.jpg 768w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20180928_110115-1024x498.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 666px) 100vw, 666px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is another in the southwest of France, high up on a hill with a grand castle and magnificent views over the valley.\u00a0 It is out of the way and hard to find, so it is never busy.\u00a0 We could easily fantasize that it was ours, where we would host grand dinners in the garden, overlooking the vines.\u00a0 But we don\u2019t like the wine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/minervois1-e1540992339846.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1072 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/minervois1-e1540992339846-146x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"497\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/minervois1-e1540992339846-146x300.jpg 146w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/minervois1-e1540992339846-768x1580.jpg 768w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/minervois1-e1540992339846-498x1024.jpg 498w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/minervois1-e1540992339846.jpg 1960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another example is a fine old Long Island mansion with \u201cgood bones\u201d as the realtors would have it.\u00a0 It is quite historic in the North Fork\u2019s brief history.\u00a0 There seem to be concerts and weddings there every weekend.\u00a0 But we don\u2019t like the wine.<\/p>\n<p>So what to say about these places?\u00a0 We know about them because we visited them without having any idea of what we would find.\u00a0 Even though we were disappointed in the wines we tasted, we took some enjoyment from our visits.\u00a0 We often urge visitors in a section of Wine Country they have never visited to do their homework and learn about the better wineries before they go, but it\u2019s not a bad idea to take a chance every once in a while.\u00a0 We have made some great discoveries that way.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you are not enjoying the wine you\u2019re being served, take advantage of the aspects of the building and the tasting room that you do like.\u00a0 Carry your glass with you and look around and soak up the pleasures that that winery offers you.\u00a0 There\u2019s a great chance you\u2019ll never pass this way again, so enjoy it while you\u2019re there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is Power Tasting\u2019s policy not to give bad reviews of any wineries.\u00a0 We feel that there are so many wonderful wines and so many owners who do their best to make their visitors feel welcome that there is no need for negativism.\u00a0 If we feel that a particular winery makes poor wine, the less &hellip;
