{"id":1359,"date":"2019-08-31T20:00:33","date_gmt":"2019-08-31T20:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1359"},"modified":"2019-08-31T20:01:45","modified_gmt":"2019-08-31T20:01:45","slug":"how-not-to-be-a-wine-snob-part-1-acceptable-snobbery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1359","title":{"rendered":"How NOT to Be a Wine Snob \u2013 Part 1: Acceptable Snobbery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This is the first in what will be an irregular series on wine snobbery and how to avoid it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There is a difference between being a wine snob and being a wine lover.\u00a0 Many people enjoy just a glass wine or two with dinner.\u00a0 Some of them (and you are one if you are reading <em>Power Tasting<\/em>) get pleasure from reading about wine, travelling to Wine Country to taste wine and talk about wine with their friends.\u00a0 Wine snobs do all those things too but the essence of their snobbery is that they want to be and be seen to be superior in their wine knowledge compared with their friends.\u00a0 Worse yet, for those of us who appreciate wine tasting, is that they also like to lord it over total strangers standing next to them in winery\u2019s tasting room.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want to be one of those people.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/snob.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1360 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/snob-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Courtesy of theguardian.com<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Before we can talk about how NOT to be a wine snob, we ought to have an understanding of what typifies such a person.\u00a0 This becomes problematic, because there are certain things that all wine lovers do that might be considered snobbery by those who only occasionally get involved with wine.\u00a0 So it makes sense to consider the things that might be seen as snobbish by some people, but which we think are acceptable.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The way you handle <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1250\">your glass<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s all right to hold your glass by the stem, not the bowl.\u00a0 In fact it\u2019s the correct way and you should do so.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go a few steps further: You should swirl the wine in your glass and you should smell before you sip.\u00a0 If the uninitiated think you\u2019re being snobbish by doing these things, they\u2019ll just have to live with it.\u00a0 Give them time; they\u2019ll learn.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Showing tempered enthusiasm for wines you like. <\/strong>You can say, \u201cGee, I really liked that Pinot.\u00a0 It\u2019s powerful but not overwhelming\u201d.\u00a0 Going on and on is just rudeness.\u00a0 Snobbery is to say, \u201cAh yes, it reminds me of the \u201905 Pommard I tasted last season when I was in Burgundy\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=24\">Pouring out<\/a> wine<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> There are two reasons you might discard some wine.\u00a0 The first and most obvious is that you don\u2019t like it.\u00a0 The other is that you\u2019re being conscious of the alcohol you\u2019re taking on.\u00a0 Either way, if you\u2019re discreet and just move on to the next, that\u2019s acceptable.\u00a0 Some folks who are new to wine tasting think it\u2019s incumbent on them to finish every drop.\u00a0 It\u2019s not.\u00a0 Snobs make a show of their displeasure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Asking to compare two similar wines side by side.<\/strong> At a winery renowned, say, for their Cabernet Sauvignons, it\u2019s not only acceptable but downright sensible to taste them in parallel rather than serially.\u00a0 The server doesn\u2019t care and you get a better sense of what that winery is doing.\u00a0 Even \u2013 no, especially \u2013 a wine tasting beginner will benefit from tasting wine this way.\u00a0 As long as the wine is sipped and not guzzled, it gives anyone a chance to become a knowledgeable taster, not a snob.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the first in what will be an irregular series on wine snobbery and how to avoid it.
