{"id":1365,"date":"2019-10-01T13:17:44","date_gmt":"2019-10-01T13:17:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1365"},"modified":"2019-11-29T21:30:40","modified_gmt":"2019-11-29T21:30:40","slug":"how-not-to-be-a-wine-snob-part-2-italy-and-the-rest-of-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1365","title":{"rendered":"How NOT to Be a Wine Snob \u2013 Part 2: Italy and the Rest of Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The popular American view of European wine lovers is that they are all snobs.\u00a0 Equally, many Europeans think that Americans, wine lovers or not, are hicks.\u00a0 Of course, neither typification is true, but there are just enough people who fit either category to give life to the stereotypes.\u00a0 It does no one any good to show a European that Americans can be wine snobs also.<\/p>\n<p>In our experience, those Americans who try to show themselves as superior in their wine knowledge compared with their friends are a bit more restrained when they are in European sectors of Wine Country.\u00a0 For one thing, many don\u2019t speak the languages and so are somewhat intimidated themselves.\u00a0 (English-speaking countries in Europe don\u2019t have wine worth discussion.\u00a0 Beer they do have and the folks there can be pretty snobbish about their bitters.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/snob2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1366 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/snob2-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/snob2-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/snob2-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/snob2.png 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Cartoon courtesy of the drinksbusiness.com<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For another thing, most Americans probably don\u2019t have the familiarity with the wines of Italy, France or Spain than they do with those of Napa Valley.\u00a0 So there\u2019s only so much lording it over others that they can get away with.\u00a0 Nonetheless, you don\u2019t want to be one of those people who gives Americans a bad name overseas.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t try to speak like a local.<\/strong> Unless you are truly multi-lingual, don\u2019t fake it.\u00a0 Most of the servers speak English, as do a great many Europeans today.\u00a0 It\u2019s okay to use terms like <em>bianco<\/em> and <em>rosso<\/em>, or <em>blanc<\/em> (don\u2019t pronounce the \u201cc\u201d) and <em>rouge<\/em> but full sentences aren\u2019t required.<\/li>\n<li><strong>But do learn a little of the local language.<\/strong> Contrary to the previous tip, it\u2019s still a good idea to be polite and ask if the server speaks English before launching into a request for a tasting.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that difficult to learn \u201cParla inglese?\u201d or \u201cParlez-vous anglais?\u201d\u00a0 Imagine if a foreigner came up to you and started spouting away in Italian or French.\u00a0 You would probably just walk away.\u00a0 So if they reply that they don\u2019t know English, you\u2019ve at least established the ground rules for some pidgin communications abetted by hand signals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t compare what you\u2019re tasting with American wines you\u2019re familiar with.<\/strong> Even in France, where the grapes are the same as in California, Washington and New York they just don\u2019t taste the same.\u00a0 And in Italy, Spain or Germany you may be tasting wines from totally unfamiliar grapes.\u00a0 You can\u2019t win.\u00a0 If you say that the wines you\u2019re tasting aren\u2019t as good as he ones back home, you will have instantly proven that you ARE a snob.\u00a0 And if you say that the American wines are worse, they\u2019ll wonder why you\u2019re comparing at all.\u00a0 After all, they had all those grapes first.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be appreciative.<\/strong> In the States, if you don\u2019t like a wine, you (should) pour it out quietly and move on.\u00a0 In Italy, for example, you may be tasting very unfamiliar wine.\u00a0 It might take you a little while to become accustomed enough to a wine to know if you like it or not.\u00a0 So even if you don\u2019t immediately like what\u2019s you\u2019re sipping, show that you appreciate the opportunity to taste it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The popular American view of European wine lovers is that they are all snobs.\u00a0 Equally, many Europeans think that Americans, wine lovers or not, are hicks.\u00a0 Of course, neither typification is true, but there are just enough people who fit either category to give life to the stereotypes.\u00a0 It does no one any good to &hellip;
