{"id":1563,"date":"2020-05-29T18:48:55","date_gmt":"2020-05-29T18:48:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1563"},"modified":"2020-05-29T18:48:55","modified_gmt":"2020-05-29T18:48:55","slug":"taking-wine-back-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1563","title":{"rendered":"Taking Wine Back Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It happens so often.\u00a0 You\u2019re on vacation in Wine Country and you taste a wine that\u2019s <em>just so good<\/em>.\u00a0 You must buy some to have as a souvenir of your wonderful trip.\u00a0 The bottle gets carefully packed in your checked luggage and stored in that special place you have for your best wines.\u00a0 It\u2019s being saved for a special occasion.\u00a0 But when that day comes, you open the bottle and\u2026meh.\u00a0 \u201cWhat was I thinking?\u201d you ask yourself while you finish the bottle in disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>You hear people say, \u201cThis wine just doesn\u2019t travel\u201d.\u00a0 Malarkey!\u00a0 That may be true for a well-aged Bordeaux that has accumulated a lot of sediment, but not for a new release that you try at most wineries.<\/p>\n<p>What happened, and what can you do about it?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Everything is better on vacation.<\/strong> When you go wine tasting, you become enthralled with the beauty of the vineyards, the friendliness of the server, the elegance of the tasting room, the beautiful weather, some of the above, all of the above.\u00a0 Your dining room table is very nice, but it can\u2019t compare to the emotional pull of a long-remembered vacation.\u00a0 The best advice is not to try to remember what the wine was like back then and to enjoy if for what it is now.\u00a0 But if you must, try to recreate the memory of that special time.\u00a0 Talk about it, especially with your Significant Other who shared that experience with you.\u00a0 The memory won\u2019t make the wine taste better but it might make you feel better about it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/vinho_verde.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1564 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/vinho_verde-300x193.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"616\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/vinho_verde-300x193.png 300w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/vinho_verde.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Vinho verde.\u00a0 Photo courtesy of visitportoandnorth.travel<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s not the same wine anymore.<\/strong> When you tasted that wine, it was young.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve stored it for a couple of years, it has changed.\u00a0 Some wines improve with age, but there are many that don\u2019t.\u00a0 Most Portuguese <em>vinho verde<\/em> shouldn\u2019t see its second birthday.\u00a0 A lot of Zinfandels are meant to be drunk when released.\u00a0 If your save-for-a-special-occasion wine is like one of those, you might want to have that occasion shortly after you arrive back home.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You waited too long.<\/strong> Sometimes a bottle just seems to find a spot in the rack that you don\u2019t notice.\u00a0 Years go by, other purchases are made and then one day you find that special bottle, almost forgotten.\u00a0 Did it bake in the summers gone by?\u00a0 Has it reached and passed its peak?\u00a0 It\u2019s not a bad idea to let some wines age, but it\u2019s a very good idea to remember that you have something special and not let it pass its time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It may be even better than you remember.<\/strong> As noted above, with time it\u2019s not the same as the wine you tasted.
