{"id":167,"date":"2016-01-31T21:22:44","date_gmt":"2016-01-31T21:22:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=167"},"modified":"2016-01-31T21:24:56","modified_gmt":"2016-01-31T21:24:56","slug":"st-supery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=167","title":{"rendered":"St. Sup\u00e9ry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>St. Sup\u00e9ry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We read in Wine Spectator recently that the family that founded the St. Sup\u00e9ry winery is selling it to the Chanel company.\u00a0 Chanel is best known for perfume, of course, but it already has winery holdings in France.\u00a0 We can only hope that the new owners continue the excellent tasting experience in the winery\u2019s St. Helena location.<\/p>\n<p>As you pull onto the property from Napa valley\u2019s Route 29 you see a large white clapboard house on your right.\u00a0 It\u2019s called the Atkinson House.\u00a0 St. Sup\u00e9ry has restored the house, both inside and out, and it is open to the public by appointment. \u00a0It features a living museum of a late 1800 vintner&#8217;s life.\u00a0 This historic old home is an archetype of what anyone would expect a prosperous St. Helena farmer to live in\u2026a century ago.<\/p>\n<p>The Atkinson House belies the handsome building that contains the tasting room.\u00a0 The main tasting room itself is modern and airy with windows that overlook the vineyard.\u00a0 They also have a lot of merchandise for sale.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-168 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/st.supery1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"st.supery1\" width=\"485\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/st.supery1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/st.supery1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/st.supery1-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>The Atkinson House at St. Sup\u00e9ry \u00a0<\/em><em>(photograph courtesy of St. Sup\u00e9ry Estate Vineyards and Winery)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Most of the time, we recommend that visitors just belly up to the bar to get an overall sense of what a winery produces.\u00a0 This is certainly true at St. Sup\u00e9ry, where the tasting room is capacious enough even to accommodate weekend crowds.<\/p>\n<p>As we have written elsewhere, there are some good reasons to take special seated tastings.\u00a0 [See <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=99&amp;action=edit\">By Appointment Only<\/a>]\u00a0 At St. Sup\u00e9ry, the special tastings are well worth considering.\u00a0 They have several, including a wine and cheese pairing and a class that they call Aromatherapy with a Corkscrew, which we haven\u2019t tried.\u00a0 We did take and highly recommend their Vineyard to Glass tour.\u00a0 An experienced sommelier hands you a glass of wine and then escorts you outside to walk through the vineyards.\u00a0 St. Sup\u00e9ry places great emphasis on <em>terroir<\/em>, and when you can see the ground and the vines where the wine you are tasting comes from, you really understand the inherent relationship among dirt, sky, water and wine. \u00a0If you go, don\u2019t miss the exhibit of the different soils in their vineyards.<\/p>\n<p>The tasting room employees we have encountered were welcoming and knowledgeable at St. Sup\u00e9ry. \u00a0\u00a0In addition to the people, the architecture reinforces the pleasure of a tasting.\u00a0 The gallery on the upper floor is usually worth a look, as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/st.supery1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-168\"><br \/>\n<\/a>In the past we have bought St. Sup\u00e9ry\u2019s Cabernet Franc and Merlot.\u00a0 We especially enjoy their Bordeaux blend, which they call Elu or \u201cthe Elect\u201d in French.\u00a0 Elu should definitely be included in any tasting.\u00a0 Make sure to see the bottle, because the label is especially attractive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>St. Sup\u00e9ry We read in Wine Spectator recently that the family that founded the St. Sup\u00e9ry winery is selling it to the Chanel company.\u00a0 Chanel is best known for perfume, of course, but it already has winery holdings in France.\u00a0 We can only hope that the new owners continue the excellent tasting experience in the &hellip;
