{"id":1775,"date":"2021-02-25T19:43:28","date_gmt":"2021-02-25T19:43:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1775"},"modified":"2021-02-25T19:45:31","modified_gmt":"2021-02-25T19:45:31","slug":"advising-friends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1775","title":{"rendered":"Advising Friends"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometime in the near future, we certainly hope, people will start traveling again.\u00a0 Some of your friends may plan on a vacation in which wine tasting will be a part.\u00a0 Because they know that you\u2019ve been to the part of the world that they\u2019ll be visiting, they may turn to you for advice.\u00a0 This can put you into a very tricky position.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want to be planning their vacation for them and they might not have the same level of knowledge about wine.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want to be evasive but you don\u2019t want to be too prescriptive, either.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s assume that they\u2019ve been wine tasting before, so you don\u2019t need to tell them about <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=917\">the basics<\/a>.\u00a0 At the same time, you don\u2019t want them to be annoyed with you if they follow your advice and don\u2019t have a good time.\u00a0 Here are some tips to help you be to be helpful, without putting a strain on your friendship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2920.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1776\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2920-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"648\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2920-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2920-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2920-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/a><em>Tell them about the views.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Avoid the \u201cfavorite\u201d question<\/strong>. There\u2019s no way you can deal with \u201cWhat\u2019s your favorite winery?\u201d.\u00a0 For one thing, you may not have a favorite (and ought to say so).\u00a0 But then there\u2019s the matter of favorite for what?\u00a0 The best wine?\u00a0 The best tour?\u00a0 The most fun?\u00a0 The most <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=545\">knowledgeable servers<\/a>?\u00a0 You\u2019re better off listing these types of categories and suggesting several places that fit in each one.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Steer them away from places you didn\u2019t like<\/strong>. It\u2019s better to tell people what to avoid than what they \u201c<em>absolutely<\/em> <em>must taste\u201d<\/em>.\u00a0 If they go to your big time recommendations and aren\u2019t as happy as you were, they\u2019ll be disappointed.\u00a0 But if you tell them that a certain winery has awful plonk or that the d\u00e9cor is lugubrious, they\u2019ll thank you.\u00a0 It\u2019s a good idea to say why you did and didn\u2019t like a particular winery.\u00a0 For example, we remember one where the wine was just dreadful but they had an interesting collection of antique instruments.\u00a0 If your friends are musicians or music lovers, they might put up with the wine just to see the cellos.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consider the seasons<\/strong>. If you visited the area they\u2019re going to in autumn, and their trip is in the early spring, they\u2019ll have a different experience than you did.\u00a0 You saw the radiant colors; they\u2019re going to get bare vines.\u00a0 They may have a wonderful trip but it won\u2019t be the same as yours.\u00a0 So qualify the advice you give them with the time of year in mind.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Think about their vacation, not just their wine tasting<\/strong>.
