Paul was his father.\u00a0 Jean-Paul took over in 2005 and the vineyard was soon mentioned among the best of Ch\u00e2teauneuf du Pape.\u00a0 Today, Autard makes four Ch\u00e2teauneufs: a white and three reds, foremost among which are La Ronde and Juline.\u00a0 There is also a C\u00f4tes de Rh\u00f4ne and, true to tradition, some local wines unavailable in North America.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/autard2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1850 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/autard2-300x162.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"646\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/autard2-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/autard2.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 646px) 100vw, 646px\" \/><\/a><em>Interior of the winery.\u00a0 Photo courtesy of the winery.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Domaine is not actually in the town of Ch\u00e2teauneuf du Pape but just outside it in a hamlet called Courth\u00e9zon.\u00a0 It\u2019s not hard to reach, just a short drive away from the main town.\u00a0 In our experience, the winery is nothing like what we Americans are used to.\u00a0 It\u2019s a large farmhouse, where Jean-Paul and his family make, store and sell wine.\u00a0 It is not set up for visitors in the way we find in California, although you can expect a pleasant welcome.\u00a0 When we visited, it was Madame Autard who welcomed us and chatted amiably with us (in French, of course).\u00a0 After a tasting, we asked some rather specific questions about the winemaking technique and distribution back home, so she called out \u201cJean-Paul, please come.\u00a0 We have visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We then had an interesting conversation and offered him to visit us when he was next in New York (an offer never taken up, alas).\u00a0 It was not so much that we had a unique experience (although we did) but rather that the man is as approachable as is his wine.\u00a0 We make no guarantee that you will have a similar experience if you should stop by, but we do think you will enjoy the wine.<\/p>\n<p>Domaine Paul Autard has been making wine since 1924, a talent passed down through the generations.\u00a0 This continues today.\u00a0 Jean-Paul is communicating to his children, Jules and Pauline, \u201c<em>une somme pr\u00e9cieuse de connaissances, d&#8217;observations et le travail de la vigne\u201d<\/em> (\u201ca precious sum of knowledge, observations and work in the vineyard\u201d).\u00a0 The winery\u2019s flagship wine is Juline, derived from his kids\u2019 first names.<\/p>\n<p>When we visited, the Autards gave us a corkscrew with the Domaine\u2019s name and logo on it.\u00a0 To this day, we use it to open his (and other people\u2019s) wines.\u00a0 Each glass of Paul Autard comes with an extra dollop of memories.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are many wines that show the skill of the winemaker.\u00a0 There are only a few that demonstrate the artistry of a winemaker.\u00a0 Today, especially in America, rich people or corporations own wineries;
