{"id":1871,"date":"2021-06-29T15:57:52","date_gmt":"2021-06-29T15:57:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1871"},"modified":"2021-06-29T15:57:52","modified_gmt":"2021-06-29T15:57:52","slug":"just-stopping-by","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1871","title":{"rendered":"Just Stopping By"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For most people, travelling to Wine Country is a trip, one that often involves a flight and a rather lengthy drive.\u00a0 If you\u2019re going to go through all that, you surely want to justify your exertions by visiting several wineries, if only to get a feel for what that region can make.\u00a0 However, some fortunate people live close enough to a wine-producing area that they can spend a few hours wine tasting whenever they want.\u00a0 Or they can just stop by a winery for an easygoing half-hour or so, with some nice wine to add to the pleasure.<\/p>\n<p>If you happen to be among those happy few, you may already have taken advantage of nearby wineries.\u00a0 We have met some people in our wine tasting adventures who have told us that they live so close that they often hop on their bikes and come over on particularly pleasant weekend afternoons for a taste or two.<\/p>\n<p>As residents of New York City, we can\u2019t take advantage of \u201cjust stopping by\u201d wine tasting.\u00a0 Even a trip to Long Island\u2019s North Fork entails at least two hours on the expressway.\u00a0 But on a few occasions, we have had the chance to be the \u201clocals\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/ile-dorleans.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1872 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/ile-dorleans-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"666\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/ile-dorleans-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/ile-dorleans-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/ile-dorleans-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/ile-dorleans.jpg 1430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 666px) 100vw, 666px\" \/><\/a><em>A vineyard in the \u00cele d\u2019Orleans.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We have a home in Qu\u00e9bec City, which is a fairly populous metropolis.\u00a0 But it\u2019s also only minutes away from the \u00cele d\u2019Orleans, which is unquestionably countryside, the source of much of the fruits and vegetables for the city.\u00a0 It is also the home to a half dozen <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=114\">wineries<\/a>.\u00a0 Many a summer weekend we drive over to the island in the middle of the St. Lawrence River to buy corn and tomatoes or just to breath some rustic air.\u00a0 It\u2019s no big deal for us to stop by and try a glass or two at one of the wineries.\u00a0 To be honest, none of the table wines are particularly notable, but some of the ice wines (it gets awfully icy in Qu\u00e9bec) are quite good.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etude4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1873 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etude4-300x232.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etude4-300x232.png 300w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etude4.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><em>Etude Winery.\u00a0 Photo courtesy of the winery.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, business required us to spend a few months living in Sacramento, only an hour from Napa Valley in one direction and Amador County in the other.\u00a0 There were of course some weekends when we visited multiple wineries, with others when had non-wine reasons to be in Napa Town.\u00a0 The road back to Sacramento took us right by <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=491\">Etude Winery<\/a>, one of our favorites, where we are members of their wine club.\u00a0 The servers became used to us stopping by for a few pours of their top wines, which we enjoyed in big Adirondack chairs on their terrace.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we once took a lengthy vacation in the <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1036\">Languedoc<\/a>.\u00a0 When it was market day in the village of St. Chinian, we\u2019d drive in for our <em>pain<\/em> and <em>fromage<\/em>.
