{"id":2081,"date":"2022-04-28T15:58:29","date_gmt":"2022-04-28T15:58:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2081"},"modified":"2022-04-28T15:58:29","modified_gmt":"2022-04-28T15:58:29","slug":"greenport-long-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2081","title":{"rendered":"Greenport, Long Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Going wine tasting on <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=946\">Long Island\u2019s North Fork<\/a> is a day trip for New York City residents.\u00a0 Except it isn\u2019t.\u00a0 Figure two hours each way on the Long Island Expressway <em>if you\u2019re very lucky<\/em> and it\u2019s easy to see why it\u2019s a good idea to plan for at least one overnight stay.\u00a0 Moreover, that gives visitors a chance to take in the little villages and towns along the skinny peninsula at Long Island\u2019s northeastern end.\u00a0 (The southern fork is where rich New Yorkers go to get away from other rich New Yorkers.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/greenport1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2082 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/greenport1-198x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"416\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/greenport1-198x300.png 198w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/greenport1.png 498w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 416px) 100vw, 416px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Photo courtesy of Pinterest.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Once you pass through Jamesport, Mattituck, Cutchogue, Peconic and Southold you\u2019ll get to Greenport.\u00a0 It\u2019s the largest village on the North Fork, but it can hardly be called a town, much less a city.\u00a0 It is where you\u2019ll find the most inns, restaurants and retail establishments.<\/p>\n<p>These days, the major industries in Greenport are tourism and wine, which are obviously related.\u00a0 It\u2019s a scenic village with roots back to the 17<sup>th<\/sup> century, when it was settled by people expanding beyond New Haven in Connecticut.\u00a0 At one time, fishing, oystering and whaling were the primary means of livelihood in Greenport.\u00a0 The oceans were overfished and the waters became too foul for oysters and the North Fork became known for agriculture, in particular duckling and potatoes.<\/p>\n<p>Greenport always retained its maritime character and many people still make their way there to sail their pleasure craft.\u00a0 There is a thriving business in charter fishing, which is not our thing.\u00a0 But we hear from others that at a non-industrial scale the waters are plentiful with bluefish, flounder and other flatfish, fluke, striped bass, porgies and sea bass.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Greenport2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2083 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Greenport2-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Greenport2-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Greenport2-768x486.jpg 768w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Greenport2-1024x648.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Greenport2.jpg 1453w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Photo courtesy of Food &amp; Wine Magazine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We prefer to take our fish one at a time, on a plate with a little lemon sauce.\u00a0 Greenport is famous for its restaurants, all nautically themed with names like the Frisky Oyster and Crabby Jerry\u2019s.\u00a0 Quite a few are elegant spots with fine wine lists and views of the marinas.\u00a0 Others are more casual, with picnic tables rather than white tablecloths.<\/p>\n<p>A half century ago, when Alex and Louisa Hargrave decided that potato fields might also do well with grape vines, they created an attraction that continues to bring many visitors to the North Fork and into Greenport.\u00a0 Now, Greenport is not St. Helena or Healdsburg, but for those whose idea of a good time is a glass of local wine on a charming patio (AKA the readers of <em>Power Tasting<\/em>), Greenport is a place to visit.<\/p>\n<p>There is a New England vibe to Greenport, some of which is mostly its natural heritage and little bit the creation of town planners.\u00a0 Either way, a wine tasting trip with time given to enjoying the pleasures of an authentic fishing village, polished up to be sure, is well worthwhile.\u00a0 Unfortunately, Greenport gets crowded in summer and empties out the rest of the year.\u00a0 We enjoy a midweek getaway in late May or early September best of all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Going wine tasting on Long Island\u2019s North Fork is a day trip for New York City residents.\u00a0 Except it isn\u2019t.\u00a0 Figure two hours each way on the Long Island Expressway if you\u2019re very lucky and it\u2019s easy to see why it\u2019s a good idea to plan for at least one overnight stay.\u00a0 Moreover, that gives &hellip;
