{"id":2207,"date":"2022-10-28T17:11:42","date_gmt":"2022-10-28T17:11:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2207"},"modified":"2022-10-28T17:11:42","modified_gmt":"2022-10-28T17:11:42","slug":"orange","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2207","title":{"rendered":"Orange"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Americans have a lot of difficulty with the word, <em>orange<\/em>.\u00a0 We\u2019re not sure if it\u2019s two syllables or one or whether the first two letters are pronounced ah, aw or oh.\u00a0 With Orange counties in New York, California and Florida, we\u2019re not even sure where it is.\u00a0 So a discussion on Orange, a city in France\u2019s Rh\u00f4ne valley, ought to start with the pronunciation, which is <em>oar-AHNZH<\/em>, with the <em>r<\/em> sort of strangled at the back of the throat and the <em>n<\/em> stuck in the nose.<\/p>\n<p>The city of Orange has a lot of history.\u00a0 First there were the Gauls. Then when Julius Caesar won his war, some Roman veterans set up what became Orange.\u00a0 The name is based on the Gallo-Roman name for the fort that was there and over time it\u2019s morphed into the color we know as the Syracuse University basketball team.\u00a0 Oh, yes, and that fruit of the same name.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/orange1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2208 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/orange1-300x180.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"645\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/orange1-300x180.png 300w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/orange1.png 618w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Roman Theater in Orange, in performance.\u00a0 Photo courtesy of All About World Heritage Sites.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are no Gallic ruins that can be seen but there is a lot of ancient Rome still in Orange that can be visited and admired.\u00a0 The best known is the Roman Theater, still in use for concerts and plays (in French, not Latin).\u00a0 The seating was restored in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, but the stage \u2013 overseen by a statue of the Emperor Augustus \u2013 is original.\u00a0 The theater accommodates 10,000 people to this day.<\/p>\n<p>There is also an Arc de Triomphe that had been incorporated into the walls of the medieval city and now stands alone in restored glory.\u00a0 The triumph in question was Caesar\u2019s victory over the Gauls, which does seem a bit like rubbing it in.<\/p>\n<p>Orange sits very much in the midst of Proven\u00e7al Wine Country.\u00a0 Ch\u00e2teauneuf du Pape is the next town over; Beaume de Venise, Vacqueyras and Gigondas are due east, twenty minutes\u2019 drive on small rural roads.\u00a0 There is no shortage of great wine to be had if you\u2019re in Orange.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/orange2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2209 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/orange2-300x164.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"646\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/orange2-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/orange2.png 550w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 646px) 100vw, 646px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The market in Orange.\u00a0 Photo courtesy of The Good Life France.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As wine tasters, you\u2019ll certainly take advantage of travelling through the environs of Orange.\u00a0 But be sure to leave time to enjoy this fine little city.\u00a0 It is much more than ruins.\u00a0 Of course, there\u2019s a museum and a cathedral, as there are in virtually every French town and city.\u00a0 But the people of Orange (Orangians? Orangeois?
