{"id":2273,"date":"2023-01-30T19:21:18","date_gmt":"2023-01-30T19:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2273"},"modified":"2023-01-30T19:31:42","modified_gmt":"2023-01-30T19:31:42","slug":"mountain-wine-tasting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2273","title":{"rendered":"Mountain Wine Tasting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an overly broad, but nonetheless true, pronouncement we can say that all wine comes from one of two places: hillsides and valleys.\u00a0 Some, but not many, of these hillsides are actually mountains, but most are just large hills that the locals call Mt. This and Mt. That.\u00a0 For example, there\u2019s the famous Burgundies from Montrachet, which is Mount Rachet to anglophones and, quite frankly, is nothing more than a bump on the plain.<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes, you may want to try some wines from mountain wineries.\u00a0 If you\u2019re going wine tasting in Napa\/Noma, Valpolicella or the Languedoc or the Northern Rhone you\u2019ll have the opportunity to enjoy wines from both upper and lower altitudes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_2770.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2281 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_2770-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"659\" height=\"439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_2770-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_2770-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_2770-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 659px) 100vw, 659px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Chappellet vineyards in winter.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Visiting wineries in the valleys is a relatively simple affair.\u00a0 Get on the region\u2019s main drag and drive along; you\u2019ll find vineyards and wineries on either side of the road.\u00a0 Wine tasting in mountainous regions is a bit trickier.\u00a0 There is no main drag.\u00a0 Wineries are harder to find and are usually further apart.\u00a0 And the driving is considerably more difficult.<\/p>\n<p>So if you plan to taste in the mountains, it\u2019s a good idea to consider a few tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Know where you\u2019re going. <\/em><\/strong>Of course, this is good advice throughout life, but it has double resonance in mountain wine tasting.\u00a0 For one thing, we have found that GPS systems get a little lost up high where the \u201cstreets\u201d are often little more than barely paved roads.\u00a0 Also, there are often few signs to let you know that you\u2019re actually headed in the right direction.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Plan your time.<\/em><\/strong> It takes time to drive up a mountain.\u00a0 And once you get where you\u2019re going, it takes time to get back.\u00a0 Then, once you get to a winery up in the hills, you may find it\u2019s the only one in the area, so your trip is for just one tasting.\u00a0 Now, that\u2019s not all bad.\u00a0 We\u2019ll take the drive anytime if the destination is <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1273\">Chappellet<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=127\">Quintarelli<\/a>, even if it takes all or most of the afternoon.\u00a0\u00a0 We\u2019re not sure, though that we\u2019d make such a drive for a winery we\u2019ve never heard of.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Recognize the exceptions to the previous tip.<\/em><\/strong> There are mountains with a selection of wineries.\u00a0 Napa Valley\u2019s Spring Mountain, for example, offers a pretty broad selection of wineries at which you may taste.\u00a0 Some of them, like Cain, Pride and Smith-Madrone are well worth a visit.\u00a0 The same may be said of France\u2019s C\u00f4te R\u00f4tie, where there is, in fact, a small but drivable main road, the D386, along which you\u2019ll find many excellent wineries and even some places to eat.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Speaking of which, bring your lunch.<\/em><\/strong> Noting the exception in the previous tip, there are unlikely to be many restaurants, caf\u00e9s or even snack bars up in the mountains.\u00a0 Unlike in the valleys, there is no pass-through traffic and not that many people live there.\u00a0 So it\u2019s not an economic proposition to open an eatery there.\u00a0 You may have to drive a while for something to eat.\u00a0 We were in the hills above Valpolicella and asked a winemaker where we might have lunch.\u00a0 He pointed across the valley to a spot on the horizon atop the next ridge.\u00a0 Down one mountain, ten miles in the valley and up another on we had a great meal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In an overly broad, but nonetheless true, pronouncement we can say that all wine comes from one of two places: hillsides and valleys.\u00a0 Some, but not many, of these hillsides are actually mountains, but most are just large hills that the locals call Mt.
