{"id":2301,"date":"2023-02-27T16:03:30","date_gmt":"2023-02-27T16:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2301"},"modified":"2023-02-27T16:04:43","modified_gmt":"2023-02-27T16:04:43","slug":"wines-you-cant-buy-back-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2301","title":{"rendered":"Wines You Can\u2019t Buy Back Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It happens so often.\u00a0 We\u2019re at a winery and really loving the wine we\u2019re tasting.\u00a0 We don\u2019t have the space to take any home with us, so we ask, \u201cWhere can we buy this wine?\u201d only to be told that it\u2019s for sale in the winery only.\u00a0 Or for club members only.\u00a0 Or, overseas, that the production is so small that distributors don\u2019t find it worthwhile to export it.\u00a0 The only thing we could do is to buy a case on the spot \u2013 if they\u2019ll sell it to us \u2013 and have it shipped, which is ruinously expensive.\u00a0 So all we can do is leave, just a little disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>If you find yourself in such a situation, here are some tips to soothe your disappointment.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Have someone local pick up a few bottles for you.<\/strong> This isn\u2019t always feasible, because you may not know anyone in some of the more remote corners of Wine Country.\u00a0 But in the instances when you do have a local friend, you might ask them to hold on to this special wine until your next trip or when they visit you.\u00a0 Of course, these had better be very reliable friends\u2026 or they may be overly tempted to try out the wine you leave with them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/estanilles.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2302 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/estanilles-100x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/estanilles-100x300.png 100w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/estanilles.png 121w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Consider the winery\u2019s other wines.<\/strong> It\u2019s too bad that you can\u2019t find a top-of-the-line wine in your home town, but maybe you can find one of their other wines that are more available.\u00a0 If a winemaker is capable of something that knocked your socks off, they probably are as attentive to their lesser wines as they are conscientious with their best one.\u00a0 We have experienced this with <a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=1174\">Ch\u00e2teau des Estanilles <\/a>in France.\u00a0 Their <em>Raison d\u2019Etre<\/em> is one of our favorite wines from the Languedoc, but it\u2019s produced so sparingly that they don\u2019t ship it.\u00a0 But they have another they call <em>Vallongue<\/em>, and we drink it frequently when we\u2019re in Canada.\u00a0 (For some reason, it\u2019s not imported into the US.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use your taste memory to record a great souvenir.<\/strong> There is an ocean of wine in this world and you\u2019re not going to taste them all.\u00a0 A small percentage of them are truly great; in all likelihood you\u2019re not going to have a chance to try all of them either.\u00a0 So when you do get a chance to sip something especially special, savor the moment.\u00a0 Smell it deeply.\u00a0 Roll it around in your mouth, while doing your best to remember every nuance of what you\u2019re tasting.\u00a0 You may never pass this way again, so <em>carpe diem<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tell your friends about the wine that got away.<\/strong> Sort of like fishermen do.\u00a0 The point is that you know you\u2019ve had a great experience.\u00a0 If nothing else, you\u2019ll encourage your friends to visit that winery so they can share your enthusiasm.\u00a0 Or maybe just make them a little jealous.\u00a0 But avoid being a wine snob;
