{"id":2495,"date":"2023-11-05T19:32:10","date_gmt":"2023-11-05T19:32:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2495"},"modified":"2023-11-05T19:32:18","modified_gmt":"2023-11-05T19:32:18","slug":"how-to-go-wine-tasting-with-limited-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/?p=2495","title":{"rendered":"How to Go Wine Tasting with Limited Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When we are on a wine tasting trip, we are pretty serious about it.\u00a0 We chose in advance the wineries we want to visit, make appointments, pay attention to what we\u2019re tasting and take notes.\u00a0 But then there are times when we are travelling just for the sake of travel.\u00a0 Sometimes we find ourselves in previously unknown parts, foreign or domestic, where we know that wine is produced.\u00a0 We want to try the local wines but we don\u2019t have time to go to vineyards, talk with the servers and generally educate ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>So we do the best we can with the time we have.\u00a0 Here are some tips on getting a rapid introduction to what the locals are drinking.\u00a0 In our most recent travels we were in Italy, so we\u2019ll use Italian examples.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Italian_wine.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2496 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Italian_wine-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"573\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Italian_wine-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Italian_wine-768x593.jpg 768w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Italian_wine-1024x791.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 573px) 100vw, 573px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Take a chance.<\/strong> We have often been delightedly surprised in Italy to find very reasonably priced wine lists, much more so than back home, and even less expensive bottles in stores.\u00a0 So if most of the wines available in restaurants are priced in the range of 20 euros or so, why not let Lady Luck be our sommelier?\u00a0 A Falanghina may sound like the name of a luxury sports car, but it\u2019s actually a white grape mostly found in the Campania.\u00a0 We first found it by this go-ahead-and-try-it method; we loved it and have been looking for it ever since.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ask the waiter.<\/strong> If we are sitting down to a good meal, we\u2019ll naturally ask for the wine list.\u00a0 Sometimes we are told that the \u201clist\u201d is either red or white, so we know we are not about to learn anything.\u00a0 In other cases, though, we are presented with a list of labels that provide a lot of data but no information.\u00a0 We\u2019re not familiar with the region, the grapes or the wineries.\u00a0 So we ask the waiter, \u201cWhat Pugliese white goes with the meal we are ordering\u201d?\u00a0 An honest waiter will think about it and recommend something that he, at least, thinks is representative of what the region has to offer.\u00a0 (A dishonest waiter will just point you to the most expensive wine.\u00a0 Ignore him.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Find a wine shop.<\/strong> Native English speakers have a great advantage in traveling around the world.\u00a0 Especially where tourists are plentiful many people, including shopkeepers, speak English.\u00a0 So when we enter a wine shop, we can generally communicate fairly well.
