We apologize to our readers and to the people at Freixenet.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are often wine tasting destinations near big cities.&nbsp; Napa Valley is an hour or so from San Francisco.&nbsp; It\u2019s a few hours\u2019 drive from New York City to Long Island\u2019s North Fork.&nbsp; Wine is being made inside Vienna\u2019s city limits and nearby as well.&nbsp; And just outside Barcelona, there\u2019s Penedes, where Cava is made.&nbsp; An easy train ride from Barcelona to the village of Sant Sadurn\u00ed d\u2019Anoia brings you directly to Freixenet.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-1.jpeg 780w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-1-300x138.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-1-768x354.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>The Freixenet winery.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In case you weren\u2019t aware, Cava is Spain\u2019s sparkling wine.\u00a0 At Freixenet, it is made the same way as French Champagne, except that the primary grapes are Macabeo, Paralleda and Xarelo (or Xarel\u00b7lo, as the Catalans spell it).\u00a0 Their wines range from the well-known Carta Nevada and Cordon Negro to some interesting wines at the other end of their spectrum, such as Gran Reserva Brut Nature (with no <em>dosage<\/em>) and an Extra Brut.\u00a0 They also have a ros\u00e9 sparkler that is made of the Trepat grape.\u00a0 Finally, there is a dessert sparkling one made from Malvasia grapes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"256\" height=\"478\" src=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-1.jpg 256w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-1-161x300.jpg 161w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Reproduction of a Freixenet advertising poster of another era.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All these are the wines served on their wine and cheese tour, which we recommend. &nbsp;If you do take the train there, you will find the winery right at the station.&nbsp; Externally, it looks very much like a Spanish hacienda, which we guess isn\u2019t unintentional.&nbsp; The area in front of the winery has some ancient presses and a golden 1950 Chrysler.&nbsp; Once inside, the reception area is sleek and modern, decorated with art that recalls Freixenet\u2019s history.&nbsp; There\u2019s also the Freixenetmobile, in the form of a bottle of Cordon Negro.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"613\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3117\" srcset=\"https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-2.jpg 613w, https:\/\/powertasting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-2-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 613px) 100vw, 613px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>The Freixenetmobile.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tour begins with a film about Freixenet\u2019s history and current presence in the world.&nbsp; Not only are they the best selling Cava, the company sells more sparkling wine than any other producer globally.&nbsp; They have a long history, having been founded in 1914.&nbsp; They survived the Spanish Civil War that took the lives of the founder and his son.&nbsp; His widow kept Freixenet going through the Franco years.&nbsp; In 2018, they were bought out by the German Sekt maker, Henkell, so now they are not just Spanish but international<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve seen how Champagne or California sparkling wine is made, there\u2019s not much new on the tour of Freixenet.&nbsp; One fun extra is an array of antique bottling equipment.&nbsp; The high spot, naturally, is the tasting.&nbsp; There, Freixenet flexes its muscles a bit and shows of what Cava is capable of.&nbsp; As always, Power Tasting doesn\u2019t review wine, but we can say that we did enjoy what we were served and were quite delightedly surprised by Freixenet\u2019s range.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, their better Cavas aren\u2019t available in the United States and only sparingly so in Canada. &nbsp;So there\u2019s nothing else to do than travel to Spain and take the Freixenet tour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This article is meant to be the companion piece to \u201cFreixenet, Back When\u201d, published in the Experiences section of Power Tasting\u2019s April 2025 edition.\u00a0 As published, we had consistently misspelled the name of the winery, which we have since corrected.\u00a0 And while we\u2019re at it, the name of the winery is pronounced FRESH-eh-net.
